 Email marketing is, the use of emails to inform potential customers about your products and services.  

The one BIG important difference is that, in email marketing, you need the recipient’s permission to send him/her the information. If you send any information to a recipient without his permission, it will be regarded as “spam” which is unsolicited commercial  (bulk) email and as it is against the law in certain countries, the sender can be penalized. If you are accused of sending spam, you may find your email accounts closed down, your website shut off, and your reputation will go down the drain. In some parts of the world, you may even be breaking the law. 

So how do you get someone’s permission to send him emails about your products and services ? 

It became possible with a system called opt-in email advertising or permission marketing. 

This is done through an accepted system which is legal called opt-in emails. Website owners place an opt-in form on their websites requesting for a visitor’s contact details, usually the name and primary email address, in return for information, promotional gifts, services, etc. If the visitor is interested, he would fill in the form and submit it.  

 When the above submission is received, special installed software called an auto-responder will send a “thank you”  email to the given email address to confirm that the owner of the address had indeed provided the information and not a friend or prankster.  

The owner of the email address now has to click on a link which is provided in this email to confirm the same. This is called double opt-in in internet marketing jargon. When this confirmation is received, the internet marketer (website owner) sends the promised material. 

Thus, through the auto-responder, the internet marketer builds a list of subscribers which can run into hundreds or thousands depending on the popularity of the product or services he is offering. 

So he can continue to send new product information or follow-up messages at regular programmed intervals using the auto-responder. 

However, a double opt-in doesn’t mean that the internet marketer can happily send messages indefinitely to his subscribers. He can do it until the subscriber doesn’t want to receive any more emails and unsubscribes from the list. 

Yes, in every email that you send your customer, you have to provide an unsubscribe option which he can exercise if required.  

Fortunately, software called an auto-responder takes care of all the imaginable email functions an advertiser needs automatically.

What are the advantages of email marketing ?

Sending email is much cheaper and quicker than most other forms of communication
Email enables you to deliver your message directly to your target audience (unlike a website, where potential customers have to find your message)
E-mail messages are easy to track. An advertiser can track users via autoresponders and other software.
Email marketing has proven to be very successful for those who follow the rules
