Is the name chosen available for registration ? 

You can check out the availability of your chosen domain name with whatever extensions you want at the Registrar's website.   

  Make sure that you are listed as the owner or Registrant of the domain and also ensure that it is renewed on time or you may lose it to someone else. 

What will happen after the registration ?  

You will get an email from the registrar with the registration. A confirmation can also be in the form of  a display on your screen in your browser after completing an online order. Do print out the Registration details provided by your Registrar and keep for future reference

How to check for ownership  

Once the registration is done, you will be able to check your website ownership details at  http://www.whois.net/ 

Protect your domain name  

Protect your name by registering multiple extensions (.net, .org, etc.)  This prevents others from copying your name. For example, if you own topwebsite4u.com,  you could also register topwebsite4u.net and any other extension that's available. You don't have to build a website on all the domains, but you can reserve your name with a couple of other extensions.
